The Department of English Language and Literature uses the study of literature as a vehicle for language instruction and the appreciation of great texts. The Department also strives to develop and enhance the ability to write in an organized and clear manner, to use evidence in persuasive writing, and to analyze literature in a comprehensive way, focusing on issues of diction, rhetoric, historical context, genre, and theme. Daily lessons engage students through critical readings of texts, analytical presentations, and discussions. In their senior year at the Academy, students are encouraged to enroll in elective courses.
